OverRunning Clutches
What does it do? This handy little clutch will keep the rotational momentum of your mower from ""pushing"" your tractor after the clutch peddle is pushed in. A "must have" if you are using a mower on a tractor without a live pto(all Yanmars).
Want To Get A Little More Technical? Without one of these clutches- when you are out mowing & press your clutch pedal in, the mower will continue to spin due to the rotational momentum of the blades. There is actually a LOT of momentum stored in the spinning mower. Since there is no disconnect between the PTO and the transmission, this momentum continues to spin the transmission gears and you continue to move forward. Many customers call to order these clutches after slamming through their garage door, into their cars, over trees, etc. It is very scary (and DANGEROUS) to press the clutch and the tractor keeps moving. You can press the brakes but it still will take several seconds to stop and this is very hard on the transmission due to the low gearing. You will keep moving forward until you 1- shift the PTO or transmission into neutral, (difficult to do in a panic stop) or 2- the mower stops spinning.
The over running clutch acts like a ratchet. You know how you can turn hard on a ratchet one way to tighten a bolt & then it spins easily the other way? Same thing with the overrunning clutch. It allows the tractor to apply power to spin the mower but the mower can't apply its momentum back to spin the transmission. When installed you can depress the clutch & the tractor will stop instantly but the mower will gradully spin to a safe stop. You can also depress the clutch to shift gears, for example, and the mower will continue to free spin. This makes it easier to resume mowing since you don't have to spin up the mower from a complete stop again.

Standard Clutch - Order Here

Installation Time: appx 15 minutes - use the steps below. Not recommended if you plan on removing the clutch frequently.
Standard Clutch Instructions.
Locate the hole through the pto shaft. This is where the roll pin that came with your clutch will go.
- Remove the two grease zerks from the clutch. Align the inner holes with the outer holes by turning the inner part of the clutch. Insert the roll pin through the first two holes but not so far that you block the splines. Slide the clutch on to the shaft so that the roll pin is in line with the hole in the pto shaft. Drive roll pin into pto shaft. Make sure that the pin is in all the way but not so far as to catch on the outer hole. Test to be sure that your clutch is functioning by putting your pto in gear (with the tractor's engine off!) and try to turn the adapter's shaft. It should turn freely in one direction but not in the other.
