Starter Test 101

- #### DON'T RUN OVER YOURSELF! #####
- Consult your operation manual for safe starting procedures.
- Observe all safety procedures just like you would when starting the tractor normally.
- The clutch pedal must be depressed and the transmission and PTO must be in neutral.
- The throttle must be in the off position and the engine shutoff in the off position.
- Use alligator clips to hold the wires on the starter so you can read the volt meter's display from the opertor's seat.
- Ask a mechanic for help if you have ANY doubts or questions.

Do not unhook any of the wires off your starter. Touch the volt meter terminals to the starter as shown below. Use alligator clips to hold them in position. Attempt to run the starter from the operator's seat as usual (clutch pedal down but throttle in 'off' position) and watch the volt meter.

Test the starting switch circuit in the test above. If you do not get 11.8v or more during the test above then you have a bad battery, bad starter switch, bad clutch switch, or bad connection somewhere. The problem is not your starter.

Test the main starter power connection using the test above. The starter motor MUST get at LEAST 11.8v while the engine is cranking over in order to work correctly. If you do not get 11.8v or more in the test above then You have a low or bad battery or bad connection. Be sure to check the ground connection from the battery to the frame of the tractor.
