How Do I Test My Alternator

MANY MODELS, LIKE THE 1500, HAVE A GENERATOR (OR DYNAMO) INSTEAD OF AN ALTERNATOR.

DYNAMO LOOK LIKE THIS -

ALTERNATOR LOOKS LIKE THIS -

TO TEST A GENERATOR/DYNAMO, TURN THE VOLT-METER TO A/C VOLTAGE ** LIKE A HOUSE - NOT A CAR ** AND PUT THE 2 PROBES ON THE 2 CONNECTORS COMING OFF OF THE GENERATOR. THEN, EITHER START THE TRACTOR, OR IF THE GENERATOR IS ALREADY OFF, PUT IT IN A VICE AND SPIN WITH A DRILL AT AROUND 1500-2000RPM. IT SHOULD PUT OUT AT LEAST 13 VOLTS A/C AT 1500-2000 RPM.

IF YOUR MODEL HAS A TRUE ALTERNATOR YOU WILL NEED TO TEST USING THE INSTRUCTIONS BELOW:
